Clugston Construction, one of the North’s leading privately owned contractors, with offices in Hebburn, has recently completed work on an exciting £1.2M sustainable project in Sunderland for Sustainable Enterprise Strategies (SES).
The innovative building is constructed from 37 used shipping containers that have been adapted and reconditioned to create a 3 storey complex to house SES staff members and to offer start up accommodation for new businesses. The containers were supplied by local company Waste Saving Expert, which was assisted by SES as a start up business.
Each one of the 37 containers will typically have been in use for 20 years, travelling upwards of 1 million miles across oceans – transporting goods around the world – before being refurbished and given a new lease of life as corporate offices for SES in Sunderland.
Despite the innovative nature of the project and difficulties encountered in manoeuvring the containers onto and around the site, the project was completed on time as well as on budget, in only 24 weeks.
During the build process Clugston Construction worked very closely with local residents and business owners to ensure minimal disruption. This contributed towards the company achieving an ‘outstanding’ Considerate Constructors audit report. The building, the only one of its kind in the region, provides approximately 10,000 sq ft2 of office space.
Clugston Construction’s North East regional manager Steve Waggett said: “We are extremely pleased to have been chosen to develop such an exciting scheme. Not only is it an innovative use of freight containers that may have otherwise been scrapped or left unused, but it is a sustainable project that will benefit the local community in the long term.
Mr. Waggett added:
“The designers and consultants worked very closely with the site team and supply chain, to ensure the difficult and finite details, were fully discussed and managed through to completion”
Mark Heskett Saddington, director of SES commented:
“We chose his unusual method of construction because it’s sustainable and appropriate, SES is committed to the principle of reduce, re-use and recycle and of course Sunderland has a long association with shipping. It’s also a relatively quick and low cost construction method.
