Engineering school cuts energy costs and CO2 with Powerstar

EMSc (UK) Ltd, manufacturer of the Star® range of energy saving solutions, is celebrating the successful installation of its award-winning Powerstar voltage optimisation unit at St Hild’s Church of England School, a specialist engineering college in Hartlepool. The installation will see the school save £4,795 per annum in electricity costs while also substantially reducing CO2 emissions.

Powerstar was installed after Year 8 students at St Hild’s identified the need to effectively reduce the energy output of the school in order to reduce its overall environmental impact and carbon footprint and, in addition to lowering energy consumption by 9.2%, the installation will reduce annual CO2 emissions by 27.1 tonnes, which will decrease the school’s CRC tax payments by £325 per year.

Commenting on the installation Dr Alex Mardapittas, EMSc (UK) Ltd managing director and designer of Powerstar said:

“As a school dedicated to engineering, St Hild’s was looking for a true engineering solution that would deliver exceptional results. With unrivalled results in energy savings and 100% reliability in over 4500 installations, Powerstar fitted the bill.”

Robert Smith, St Hild’s Estates Manager said:

“As a Church of England school with a strong commitment to the environment and an engineering specialism, St Hild’s prides itself on creating opportunities to bring these areas together. Powerstar has allowed us to do that by providing the most up to date engineering technology specifically designed to reduce carbon emissions to help make our school more energy efficient. The savings are immediately evident and will allow us to invest more of our money into the learning and progress of our students.”

EMSc (UK) Ltd has been manufacturing the market leading voltage optimisation solution Powerstar – a unique triple wound system with a patented design that can help realise energy consumption savings of 12-15% – at its headquarters in Yorkshire for over a decade. At a time when Japanese and Chinese electronic and engineered solutions continue to dominate the market, the company is proud to say that its research, development, sourcing and manufacturing is all done in the UK.

The company is accredited with the Made in Sheffield accolade in acknowledgement of the quality of its manufacturing process, its expansion into international markets, and the overall success of Powerstar, which is exported worldwide to countries including Cyprus, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Malta and South Africa.

About Powerstar

Can save an average of 12-15% (up to 26.1% savings recorded) of electricity consumption.

Is fully designed and manufactured in the UK. All Powerstar components, including even minor items such as the paint, are sourced from UK manufacturers. The Powerstar design and any associated software are designed by EMSc UK Limited.

Requires no maintenance and has a 15 year warranty.

Comes with guaranteed savings.

Will improve the life expectancy of electrical equipment.

Will improve the power quality (reduce harmonics and improve the power factor).

Has the highest efficiency and provides better savings than any other voltage optimisation system sold in the UK (on the same load and same voltage reduction).

This has been proven in independent tests by the electricity supplier RWE npower.

RWE npower commented: We did a trial with Powerstar and one other supplier. Powerstar showed a larger overall saving compared to the other supplier. In addition, it improved the power quality more. Powerstar was the better system in all aspects, including the technical design and capabilities.
