Clugston Construction, the privately owned building and civil engineering contractor, has commenced construction work on an Energy Recovery Facility (ErF) for recycling and waste management company, Veolia Environmental Services in Shropshire. This brings to five the number of similar schemes undertaken by Clugston.
The project, located at Battlefield Enterprise Park, in Shrewsbury will see Clugston Construction once again working alongside its process engineering partner CNIM to construct the plant which will annually turn 90,000 tonnes of residual waste, unsuitable for recycling or composting, into heat and power.
Due to open in 2015, the facility, which is adjacent to the existing Household Recycling Centre and Transfer Station, will generate enough electricity to power 10,000 homes and is expected to reduce landfill disposal in the County to 5% once operational. The project, which will create 21 permanent posts, is expected to involve approx 200 construction workers during the building stage.
Commenting on the project Steve Radcliffe, managing director at Clugston Construction said: “We were delighted to have secured this contract which will be the fifth scheme we have delivered in joint venture with CNIM.”
Donald Macphail, regional director for Veolia Environmental Services (UK) plc said: “We are excited to now be entering the construction phase and once again to be working with the Clugston CNIM team who are also responsible for the construction of our ErF in Staffordshire which is due to become operational in December this year.”
Clugston Construction, part of the privately owned Clugston Group, which also has interests in logistics and property, has a strong track record in the waste recovery and energy sectors. To date, the company has either completed or is constructing ErF projects in Sheffield, Lincolnshire, Staffordshire and Oxfordshire.
Clugston Construction has also recently been selected as a finalist in two categories of the 2013 Construction News Awards – Contractor of the Year and
Safety Initiative of the Year – to be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on 11 July 2013. It is the second year in succession that the company has been shortlisted for a safety award, having won the award in 2012.
