Clugston Construction, one of the North’s leading privately owned building and civil engineering contractors – with offices in Leeds, Scunthorpe and Hebburn Tyne & Wear – is proud to announce it has won a Green Apple Environment Award for the successful delivery of the Sustainable Enterprise Strategies (SES) commercial offices in Hendon, Sunderland.
Clugston Construction was up against 200 other nominations in the Green Apple Awards for the Built Environment & Architectural Heritage section of the awards.
For the project 37 shipping containers were adapted and reconditioned to create a 3 storey complex to house SES staff members as well as start up accommodation for new businesses. The containers were supplied by local company Waste Saving Expert, which was assisted by SES as a start up business.
Each one of the 37 containers will typically have been in use for 20 years, travelling upwards of 1 million miles across oceans, transporting goods around the world, before being refurbished and given a new lease of life as corporate offices for SES in Sunderland.
Despite the innovative nature of the project and difficulties encountered in manoeuvring the containers onto and around the site, the project was completed on time as well as on budget in only 24 weeks.
Mark Heskett Saddington, director of SES commented, “We chose this unusual method of construction not only because SES is committed to the principle of reducing, re-using and recycling, but also because Sunderland has a long association with the shipping industry. It was also a relatively quick and low cost sustainable construction method.”
During the build process Clugston Construction worked very closely with local residents and business owners to ensure minimal disruption. This contributed towards the company achieving an ‘outstanding’ Considerate Constructors audit report. The building, the only one of its kind in the region, provides approximately 10,000 sq ft of office space.
Clugston Construction regional manager Steve Waggett commented, “We are really pleased to have won a second Green Apple Award, as they are only presented to sustainable projects and businesses. The award further strengthens our commitment to delivering innovative and sustainable solutions for our clients. The first award was for a similarly unique building in Teesdale in 2011”.
Clugston Construction will be awarded with a certificate and trophy at a glittering presentation ceremony in the National Self Build & Renovation Centre on the 24th of June 2013.
