Clugston secures National Distribution Centre expansion for Arco

Clugston Construction, part of the privately-owned Humberside based Clugston Group, which is currently celebrating its 80th anniversary, has been awarded the contract to begin construction of the £25 million extension to the National Distribution Centre in Hull for Arco, the UK’s leading safety company.

The 20,439m² extension, when completed in summer 2019, will double Arco’s current warehousing and logistics capacity. Designed to optimise the space available, the new facility, which will be linked to the existing building, will have a 19m high internal storage capacity, enabling it to store around 40,000 pallets. With its contemporary aesthetic it has been designed to complement Arco’s current facility, which when opened in 2000 won awards for its innovative design.

The design team supporting Arco and Clugston include Alan Wood and Partners from Hull and HBPW civils.

Commenting on the award, Steve Radcliffe, managing director at Clugston Construction, said: “Following several months of preparatory work with the designers and planners, we are delighted that the on-site works are now starting, and once again to be working with Arco, for whom we previously built an earlier extension to their National Distribution facility.”

The build is part of Arco’s £55 million investment initiative to support its ambitious growth plans and demonstrates its commitment to the local economy as the new centre could potentially create up to 200 new jobs in the Hull area. Arco’s other investments locally include a £30 million Digital Transformation Project, investment in their Quality Assurance Laboratory, and recently a new Customer Engagement Centre to be opened in July in Hull.
