Ground-breaking UK technology on show in Japan

Magnomatics, the Sheffield-based world leader in magnetic gear technology, showcased the company’s latest ground-breaking innovations for low-carbon vehicles at the JSAE Annual Congress 22-24 May 2019, Yokohama, Japan.

Magnomatics’ MAGSPLIT device, which is a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), combines engine power with an electrical boost system to provide a simple yet highly efficient hybrid powertrain. The transmission, which has one input shaft and one output shaft, provides low cost hybrid transmission for cars, buses and trucks.

Supported by Innovate UK and the Office for Low Emission Vehicles, the transmission is being developed for the global market with project partners Changan UK, Romax and University of Sheffield as a perfect fit for passenger cars and SUV models. The transmission will be controlled by a fully functioning hybrid controller system developed by Magnomatics.

Transmission sub-systems testing is ongoing; with testing due to be completed on an engine dyno at Magnomatics in August 2019. This promises to be a smooth, adept electric transmission solution for the challenging Chinese market.

Dave Latimer, CEO of Magnomatics, said: “Exciting times lie ahead for Magnomatics, as we test and confirm the capabilities of our transmission in a real working environment. The next step is to build a demonstrator vehicle with a MAGSPLIT DHT.”
